Fireworks from Old Hickory Country Club's 100th anniversary celebration drew noise complaints from residents in Hendersonville and surrounding areas on Sunday, Oct. 11.

The club, located on Hadley Avenue in Old Hickory in Davidson County, held the milestone event with live music and a fireworks display. NewsChannel 5 first reported that some residents filed complaints and others took to social media to describe the disruption. At least one Hendersonville commenter said the noise shook his windows and scared his pets. Others said the fireworks woke their children.

Dean Bell, who lives more than four miles from the club in Hermitage, told NewsChannel 5 the noise caught him off guard. "My wife and myself were sitting on the back porch watching the football games and all of a sudden we heard rumbling and popping — we thought it was gunshots at the very beginning," Bell said.

Bell said the fireworks did not bother him once he realized what was happening, as long as they were not too late at night.

Not all neighbors were upset. Tracy Overstreet, who lives a couple of streets from the club with his mother Flo, watched the show from his porch and called it entertaining.

The recurring complaint was a lack of advance notice.

The celebration had been scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 10, but was pushed to Sunday because of weather, according to the club's Facebook page. The club posted about the change online, but many residents said the notice never reached their neighborhoods. Old Hickory Country Club declined an interview request from NewsChannel 5, and no public statement from club management has been released beyond the Facebook post.

Founded in 1926 by the DuPont Company for employees in Old Hickory, the club started as a six-hole course on land once owned by the Bondurant family. It expanded to 18 holes in 1941. Steve Smith, a longtime member, purchased the club in 2018 through a partnership. Smith said in a statement reported by Fox 17 that he felt the course needed an upgrade when he bought it.

No city official in Hendersonville or Metro Nashville has commented publicly on the notification question. Because the club sits in Davidson County, Hendersonville's fireworks permit rules do not govern the event. No follow-up action from either jurisdiction has been announced as of Tuesday, Oct. 13.
