The Sumner County Board of Education discussed a resolution honoring Dolly Parton's contributions to childhood literacy at its Tuesday, Oct. 13, study session in Gallatin.
Parton, who died Aug. 25 at age 80, founded the Imagination Library in 1995 in Sevier County, Tennessee. The program mails a free book each month to enrolled children from birth to age 5, regardless of family income. By 2023 the program had gifted its 200 millionth book, according to the Imagination Library.
The resolution also appeared on the board's Sept. 8 study session agenda, indicating the item has been under discussion for more than a month.
Six other items were on the Oct. 13 agenda: proposed 2027-28 district calendars, revisions to Policy 4.303 on school activities, a discussion of Policy 1.806 on advertising and distribution of materials in schools, an update on the Student Advisory Council, the superintendent's evaluation and the board's annual agenda. The agenda did not detail what changes are proposed to either policy.
Study sessions are non-voting. Items discussed can advance to a regular meeting for formal action.
The next regular board meeting is Tuesday, Oct. 20, at 6 p.m. at 695 East Main St. in Gallatin.
