Green Hill swept Station Camp 3-0 to win the District 12-AAA volleyball championship Tuesday, Oct. 6, at Portland High School.
Senior Maddie Long earned tournament MVP honors after recording 13 kills in the title match. Long, who doubles as an outside hitter and left-back libero for the Hawks, entered the district tournament leading Green Hill in both kills (197) and digs (279) on the season. She also came up with key digs against Station Camp hitters Brooklyn Mitchell, Teagan Lange and Zoey Rowland.
The win gave Green Hill (22-8) what the Chronicle of Mt. Juliet reported as the program's second straight district title. It also snapped a streak by the Bison, who had won the previous seven district championships dating to 2017.
Green Hill and Station Camp (24-12) split the first 40 points in the opener before the Hawks pulled away for a 25-22 first-set win. The second set was all Green Hill. Seven different players recorded kills in a 25-15 rout, with Julia Cleveland and Long leading the way at five apiece.
The Bison pushed back in the third set, but Green Hill built a 20-15 lead and closed out the match 25-22. Long sealed the championship with a right-handed kill to the right side.
Hawks head coach Michelle Plummer said Long would prefer to play libero full-time, and the two discussed the switch before the season. "But I can't lose her attack on the outside," Plummer said after the match.
Long said she embraces the dual role. She told the Chronicle she loves playing back row and tries to show up for her team any way she can.
Station Camp head coach Molly Yarbrough said the district has grown more competitive, noting that both earlier tournament rounds went to five sets. The Bison had split the regular-season series with Green Hill, winning at home and losing on the road.
Both teams advance to the Region 6-AAA tournament Tuesday, Oct. 13. Green Hill will host and face Hillsboro, while Station Camp will play Lawson. The winners meet for the region title that evening, with the champion advancing to the sectional round Thursday, Oct. 15.
